Becoming Calder and Finding Eden By Mia Sheridan – 5 Stars

There is a place in modern day America with no electricity, no plumbing, and no modern conveniences. In this place, there is no room for dreams, no space for self-expression, and no tolerance for ambition.

In this place, there is a boy with the body of a god and the heart of a warrior. He is strong and faithful and serves his family honorably. But he dares to dream of more.

In this place, there is a girl with the face of an angel and a heart full of courage. To her family, she is the vision of obedient perfection. But she dares to want that which she has been told can never be hers.

When the world as you know it has ended, when all that you love has been washed away, where do you find strength?

When the new world you’ve stepped into is as isolating as the last, when your heart is broken, and your future is unclear, where do you find hope?

Finding Eden is a story of strength, discovery, forgiveness, and undying love. It is about believing in your destiny and following the path that leads to peace.

Oh boy, where to begin…Becoming Calder and Finding Eden are not stand alone books and need to be read in order. Because I read them back to back, I am going to review them as one story. Mia Sheridan amazes me in her ability to write such unique stories. The story is set in modern times, but it feels like a completely different world and time because of this strange cult world that Calder and Eden live in. In Becoming Calder, the story develops the relationship between Calder and Eden. I loved how the story develops from when Calder and Eden are children. You get to see how their forbidden love bloom and it is just beautiful. It made my heart swoon to see how they loved one another…the way they Eden left candy for Calder or the way Calder used to draw Eden…just beautiful. This strange world is crazy and terrifying; it broke my heart to see Calder and Eden having to hide their love and fear for their life. The writing was so captivating and it creates such vivid images in my mind. It really makes me wonder about these religious cults I hear about but I’ve never really given any thought about them…until now and it saddens and scares me to think of such possibilities.

In Finding Eden, the story continues after Calder and Eden survive the aftermath of a mass murder. They both think the other is dead, but they eventually reconnect. Both Calder and Eden learn to survive in our modern world and have to discover who they really are. Their love is endless and strong and I like that there was no unnecessary drama to keep them apart. As usual, Mia Sheridan provides us with a beautiful happy ending that is much deserved after reading about Calder and Eden’s struggle. I absolutely loved this book. It was a heavy and emotional read, but at the same time very uplifting. This is a must read!!
