Here is the scoop – you have to go into this book with an open mind. I think Saffron Kent is bold. She writes very forbidden and edgy storylines so you either like it or you don’t. Gods & Monsters is about Abel and Evie – the sweet princess and the town bad boy. Abel and Evie first met when Abel moved back to town after his parents died in a car crash. He was 14 and she was 12 years old. The first time they laid eyes on each other there were sparks (and a bit of smirking ). Despite Evie’s family warnings, she could not help but be drawn to Abel. They hid their friendship from her family for quite sometime. Eventually friends turn into more and the lovers escaped town. Once they were in their own little bubble in New York, Abel seems to change. They embarked in a rather toxic and unhealthy relationship. Abel was overbearing and controlling, meanwhile Evie seems to lose herself along the way. This part of their relationship might be a bit controversial which I am sure will rub people the wrong way. But keep an open mind because redemption is in the near future.
Overall, this book is well-written. First part was young love – cute and fun. The middle part is all about their adult relationships sizzling hot, passionate and super intense. The last part was emotional with Abel and Evie both seeming to grow up and realizing their demons and past mistakes. No love is without pain, right? I like that this book has an intriguing plot – unconventional / forbidden romance, the characters are well developed. There is plenty of heat, angsts and feels.
With that said, if you are looking for something edgy, knowing this story is fiction and purely for entertainment purposes, this book is for you. For those who may have similar experiences with toxic relationships in the past, Abel and Evie’s relationship might be a bit taboo and sensitive
For me, I read for entertainment so anything goes.
