My rating: 5 DREAMY STARS
“True happiness comes from what you do when it’s aligned with your heart.”
Just devoured this baby! Who would have thought this itty bitty book is only a whole 140 pages long but I’m totally exhausted. Lord! That was intense! It’s true what people say – good things come in small doses. This is the perfect case – Lauren Blakely never disappoints. This is one epic love story laced with humor, angst, heartbreak, love, faith and destiny. I want to cry. I want to scream. I want to laugh at the irony of what they lost, but mostly I want to hug and love.
Penny met Gabriel when she vacationed in Spain. It was love at first sight and the pair spent a whirlwind 3 blissful days together. Unfortunately, it was time for Penny to go back to America. Gabriel was supposed to meet Penny at the Lincoln center in NY but he never showed. This part reminded me a little bit of the movie “Sleepless in Seattle” where the lovers planned to meet on top of the Empire State building… except in this case Penny did not have a happy ending. She waited 2 hours on the steps and was left broken hearted.
“Love isn’t all or nothing. It’s a million variations, and some days are better than others. Some are luminous, and others are muted, but none of them mean the end.”
Fast forward 10 years later, Penny and Gabriel crossed paths again, this time right in Penny’s home town NY. Call it fate but Gabriel’s restaurant was the only one in NY available to host Penny’s charity event. The years were good to Gabriel – he has his dream job, is handsome and sexy as ever, except he did not recognize Penny. Has fate been so cruel to these lovers? I feel so sad for Penny and Gabriel for their missed opportunity, their love lost, and their shattered hearts. Will these lovers be able to ignite the sparks they had for each other a decade ago?
You know, I absolutely adore both characters and their journey to true love. I am so impressed with Lauren Blakely’s ability to write such a heartfelt, gorgeous love story. Here is the thing – this is a novella right? But not once did I feel rushed reading this book. From the time they met in Spain to the time they met again in NY, the reconnection, how they spent time together (even with the hiccup in between), to the epilogue – everything in the story happens at a steady pace. To write such a gorgeous storyline, the delightful characters, the banters, the narrative, even the secondary characters all in 140 pages – now that is pure talent. Everything makes sense in this story. Penny and Gabriel make sense!!!
Damn it! Now I’m going to bed wondering – “what are my three things? My proof points that the world can be a happy place?”
Do you know?
Thank you Lauren for another wonderful story that I won’t soon forget. I’m only sorry that it is a novella and I wish there was more!!!
