My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5-4 stars

This is Nicole London’s debut novel and I am quite impressed. I got a glimpse of this book after reading Sincerely Carter and I was excited to read this novel. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Mia and Dean fall in love in high school, but have a mysterious falling out. They meet years later with a lot resentment built up between them. Mia never understood what happened to cause Dean to end their relationship.
This is a second chance love story filled with “regret, resentment, & redemption” but most importantly a chance to “rebuild.”
I really enjoyed watching Dean and Mia fall in love. It’s an innocent high school love, but so sweet. Dean, the most popular boy in school, has had a crush on Mia since sophomore year and steals her notebook just so he can talk to her…swoon. The story is mainly in Mia’s POV and she really has no idea why Dean changes and treats her so cruelly. Towards the end of their high school days, Dean is terrible to Mia for unclear reasons. Years later, Mia ends of being roommates with Dean and they begin a love/hate relationship. They once again begin to fall in love, but Mia knows she has to understand the past to move forward. Toward the end of the book, we get a small glimpse of Dean’s POV, which clarifies what happened in the past. Unfortunately, I found the explanation for Dean’s behavior completely unsatisfactory. I suppose I can understand that Dean was going through a hard time and he was young. There was a lot of miscommunication. In the end though, Dean was just mean and I find his behavior appalling considering the situation. I also felt the ending was a bit rushed. There wasn’t enough development or explanation as to how Dean has this epiphany to change and fight for his redemption. I felt it just happens unexpectedly. So, there were parts of the book that I loved and parts of the book I wished had more depth. Overall, I enjoyed the book and I encourage Nicole London to keep writing. =)
